The Effects of Bethanidine Sulfate on Plasma and Urine Catecholamine Levels in Hypertensive Patients
Kang Seung-Ho

Abstract
The author undertook the study on catecholamine depleting action of bethanidine sulfate available for the treatment of hypertension, measuring the plasma catecholamine levels and urinary excretion of catecholamine by the modified fluorometric method of Weil-Malherbe and Bone during the treatment of hypertension.
The results are as followings:
1) Before the administration of bethanidine sulfate, mean blood pressure was 191/120 mmHg, mean plasma epinephrine level was 0.45¡¾0.20¥ã%, mean plasma norepineplirine level was 0.50¡¾0.08 ¥ã %, 24 hours urinary excretion of epinephrine was 32.9¡¾ 9.3 ¥ã/day, and 24 hours urinary excretion of porepinephrine was 64.1¡¾24.5 ¥ã/day.
2) After the treatment for 3 weeks, the mean blood pressure before the treatment was 191/120 mmHg which was declined to 151/99 mmHg on the last day of third week.
3) After the treatment for 3 weeks, the mean plasma epinephrine level was declined from 0.45¡¾0. 20 ¥ã % to 0.17¡¾0. 07 ¥ã % and the mean plasma norepinephrine level was declined from 0.50¡¾0.08 ¥ã% to 0.31¡¾0.06 ¥ã %.
4) The 24 hours urinary excretion of epinephrine was derceased to 15.1¡¾3.2¥ã/day on the last day of third week and that of norepinephrine to
19.6¡¾ 7.1¥ã/day.
